Daniel,

When they initially log in, users see content based on DLM Layout Fragments.  You can adjust the details of a layout fragment -- including the number & nature of the columns -- by editing the corresponding fragment-layout.xml doc and re-importing.

Here's an example of one:  https://github.com/Jasig/uPortal-start/blob/master/data/quickstart/fragment-layout/welcome-lo.fragment-layout.xml

The structure of this XML doc defines the arrangement of content on the page.  You can see there are 2 <folder name="Column" ...> elements contained in it -- follow this example.

FYI, it's also possible to adjust these columns (in the running portal) using the "DLM Fragment Administration UI;"  but changes made this way will not survive a portalInit/dataInit nor be applied to other deployments.
