Fwd: Early Alert & Importing data

Kabelo Letsoalo
Hi. I'm going through the docs but i'm not sure about a couple things.

Are early alerts generated programmatically using some parameters or do support staff have to manually create them?

Also how do I import data into SSP?

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Re: Fwd: Early Alert & Importing data

Jason Elwood
SSP provides UI to submit alerts.  The Early Alert portlet is bundled with the SSP application.  The portlet allows a faculty user to select a course and student from the course roster for whom an alert will be submitted.  The course and roster data is stored in the external_faculty_course and external_faculty_course_roster tables.  The portlet is a form in which the alert parameters can be submitted for the student.  The interaction with the database is completed via an API.  In fact, all of the operational SSP tables (all except for tables beginning with external) are managed by the API layer.

Based on that description, you have a few options for submitting alerts.  1)  The Early Alert portlet is a method for instructors to manually create alerts from within SSP.  2)  Many schools have integrated LMS systems to serve as the front-end UI to identify students.  This is done as faculty members more commonly interact with the LMS than SSP but is still manual.  3)  The APIs allow for authenticated access in most cases for GET, POST, PUT and DELETE methods.  Alerts could be programmatically created via the APIs.  Each of the available APIs and descriptions are located at:

To your second question, I am going to assume you are asking about the external data.  The are no APIs or import utilities for the external data.  Most implementers are performing ETL transactions through SQL or DBMS utilities for importing data.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Early Alert & Importing data

Kabelo Letsoalo
thanks for the help! i'd appreciate help on the following issue.

going to Early Alert page i get message "No Available Courses. There are no courses available for this user in SSP." into which table do i insert test data to resolve this?

the Course Roster drop down is empty. from which table would that data be coming from? external_faculty_course_roster? inserted a row into the external_faculty_course_roster table and drop down is still empty.

is there a database with  test data i can download from somewhere?

many thanks!

The list of alertable sections should be loaded into external_faculty_course. The rosters for those sections should be loaded into external_faculty_course_roster. FWIW, there is a page in the wiki [1] that provides a few pointers on where each external_* table is used.

For loading test data… you can load the "demo" dataset we typically use in developer and CI envs by adding this line to your $SSP_CONFIGDIR/ssp-config.properties:

  db_liquibase_changelog=classpath:org/jasig/ssp/database/masterChangeLog-demo.xml

A few caveats and additional steps:

  a) This will significantly increase startup times and memory footprint. I usually comment out that config after its first successful load.

  b) The demo data does not play nice with some of the db constraints introduced in v2.x. To work around this I usually do the following:

    b.1) Allow the app to start up completely without the demo data enabled

    b.2) Drop constraints I know won't work with the demo data. Assuming you're on Postgres:

      ALTER TABLE external_student_transcript_course
        DROP CONSTRAINT external_student_transcript_course_pkey;

      ALTER TABLE external_student_transcript_course
        DROP CONSTRAINT external_student_transcript_c_school_id_term_code_formatted_key;

      ALTER TABLE external_student_transcript_course ALTER COLUMN section_code DROP NOT NULL;

      ALTER TABLE external_student_transcript_term
        DROP CONSTRAINT external_student_transcript_term_pkey;

      ALTER TABLE external_student_transcript_term
        DROP CONSTRAINT external_student_transcript_term_school_id_term_code_key;

    b.3) Restart with demo data enabled, i.e. with the db_liquibase_changelog set as shown above.

    b.4) Comment out db_liquibase_changelog so the next restart is faster.

  c) In order to log in as any of the demo users, you'll need to add them to uPortal. From your uPortal (i.e. "SSP-Platform" checkout):

      %> ant -Dmaven.test.skip=true -Ddir=uportal-war/src/main/data/ssp_demo_entities/ data-import

       This should not require a restart.

  d) There is a wiki page with a few more details on the resulting users. [2]
